However, I did like the bulk of the story and I love that not every hero gets all they wanted. The ending did feel a little rushed and once the storm is over, the wrap up seemed a little too easy. It’s a delightful mash of conflicting motivations. Also, Alex is a fascinating element! Are they good guys? Are they bad guys? Some are doing the wrong thing for what they believe to be the right reasons. I like the way some of the characters have shifting loyalties or motivations. She thinks she’s going to save the world, but Veke and others can clearly see that isn’t going to happen. She has swallowed the koolaid and is a true believer. Here, Minister Anne is the driving force. There’s the Family of the Red Death (a group that was barely touched on in Book 1). She’s one of my favorite characters and I love her no nonsense, straight forward way of dealing with this crazy situation. There’s traps and enemies all over the place. Most of the story is set on an isolated island. This is a gripping novel and I’m glad that Clines returned us to Earth and present day after that adventure on the future moon in Book 3 ( Dead Moon). Note: Even though this is Book 4 in the Threshold Universe, it works fine as a stand alone, though it would be enhanced by reading Book 1 ( 14). Their paths will intersect in the middle of nowhere, on an uncharted island where the walls of reality are thin…and an apocalyptic threat is tearing its way through.
